Stainless Steel Flex Pipe: Types, Sizes And Selection
Match stainless steel flex pipe to exhaust, pressure, chimney or fuel-gas service. Compare diameter conventions, bend radii, lengths and ordering requirements.
Stainless steel flex pipe is not one interchangeable product. For vehicle exhaust, choose an application-compatible exhaust coupling or stripwound tubing; for pressurized fluid, a rated corrugated metal-hose assembly; for chimney relining, a listed, appliance-compatible liner system; and for building fuel gas, the specified CSST system. Identify the service before checking diameter, connections and length.
A description such as “2-inch stainless flex” does not establish actual outside diameter, end fit, pressure rating or permitted movement.

Flex Pipe Service Selector
Five product routes are shown below. Select a service to isolate its ordering checks.
| Service | Product | Verify Before Ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Short vehicle exhaust section | Exhaust bellows coupling | Specified liner construction; inlet/outlet ID; installed length; end connections; exhaust suitability. |
| Commercial-vehicle exhaust run | Application-approved stripwound/interlocked tubing | Mating-pipe dimensions; connection overlap; extended, compressed or relaxed measurement state. Not pressure tight by construction. |
| Pressurized fluid or gas | Rated corrugated metal-hose assembly, commonly braided | Working pressure at operating temperature; chemical compatibility; fittings; movement geometry. Bare interlocked exhaust tubing is not a substitute. |
| Chimney relining | Appliance-compatible flexible liner system | Liner ID; permitted fuel and vent configuration; clearances; insulation; system components. |
| Building fuel gas | Manufacturer-specified CSST system | Compatible tubing and fittings; capacity sizing; qualified installation under the system requirements. |

Different Constructions Are Not Interchangeable
An exhaust bellows coupling can have an internal interlock liner. That liner is not the same thing as a standalone stripwound tube, which is made from continuously wound, profiled strip. Corrugated pressure hose commonly has external braid; chimney liners and corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) for fuel gas belong to their own installation systems.
Do not substitute bare interlocked tubing for a pressure-tight hose. Hose Master’s stripwound guide states that stripwound hose is not pressure tight by construction. Packing can minimize leakage through its wall, but that does not make an unspecified exhaust product suitable for pressurized liquid or fuel-gas service.
Nominal ID Does Not Establish Outside Clearance
For flexible hose, nominal size may describe the inside diameter (ID) rather than the outside diameter (OD). External braid adds to the envelope. A fitting’s thread or flange size is another specification—not a substitute for hose dimensions.
The following manufacturer example shows why a generic stainless flex-pipe size chart is insufficient. All three rows are for standard Penflex P3 hose with one braid layer:
| Nominal ID | OD Over Braid | Static Radius | Dynamic Radius |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2 in. | 0.72 in. | 1.75 in. | 5.47 in. |
| 3/4 in. | 1.12 in. | 2.65 in. | 6.58 in. |
| 1 in. | 1.34 in. | 3.33 in. | 7.50 in. |
The radius columns give minimum bend radii measured to the hose centerline. Penflex defines static bend radius for installations without movement other than infrequent vibration, and dynamic radius for regular or intermittent motion. These dimensions apply to standard P3, not every stainless flex product or the P3 Compressed series. Confirm current dimensions and tolerances before ordering: nominal OD is not a guaranteed maximum. Source: Penflex catalog, terminology and P3 table.
Keep forming-wall thickness separate from the corrugated envelope. Do not infer wall thickness from the difference between catalog OD and ID, or assign a rigid-pipe schedule to the flexible body. If an end fitting is scheduled pipe, specify that fitting separately.
Overall Length And Live Length Serve Different Purposes
Overall assembly length describes the complete item, with measurement endpoints stated. Live hose length describes the flexible portion available to accommodate movement—between the braid collars in a braided assembly. A fitting can add overall length without adding usable flexible length.
Hose Master’s corrugated-hose guidance explains that overall length includes the live hose, collars and fittings; measurement endpoints vary by fitting type.
For interlocked tubing, also specify whether the length is extended, compressed or relaxed. Hose Master’s stripwound guidance states that interlocked hose is generally priced and defined in its extended state. A purchaser needing relaxed length must say so or use the product’s relaxation factor. No universal relaxation factor is provided here.
Pressure Ratings Must Match Temperature And Movement
For a pressure assembly, request the working-pressure rating at operating temperature. Nominal burst pressure is not an operating limit. Penflex’s catalog ratings are referenced to 70°F (about 21°C); elevated-temperature ratings require the applicable derating factors, with end fittings and attachment method also considered.
Specify hose, braid and fitting alloys separately. They need not match: Penflex lists products with 316L or 321 hose and 304L braid. Select materials against both the conveyed medium and external exposure rather than treating “stainless” as a complete material specification.
Also describe the motion: vibration, lateral offset, angular movement or repeated handling. A straight braided metal hose is not an axial expansion joint. Penflex specifies a traveling-loop configuration for accommodating axial motion and warns against twisting, stretching or compressing an assembly to fit. Support adjacent piping and keep bends away from end fittings. Source: Penflex pressure, materials and installation guidance.
The size table above supplies dimensions and bend radii, not working-pressure limits. It cannot establish whether a hose is suitable for your pressure, temperature or movement cycle.
Exhaust Couplings And Exhaust Tubing Need Different Checks
For an exhaust bellows replacement, verify whether the catalog diameter is inlet/outlet ID. Vibrant uses that convention for its TurboFlex couplings, which use bellows with an internal interlock liner. Confirm liner construction, end connections and suitability for the exhaust conditions.
Record both flexible-section length and overall assembly length, then confirm which one the supplier’s listed length represents. Matching the advertised diameter alone does not establish a replacement fit.
For the commercial-vehicle flex tubing covered by Walker’s installation guidance, Walker calls for checking mounts and hangers, comparing old and new tubing fully extended, and allowing connection overlap. Installation should be at the tubing’s natural lie—midway between fully compressed and fully extended.
Walker also warns that this flex tubing is not a replacement for elbows. Those instructions should not be transferred automatically to a different bellows assembly.
Chimney Liners And CSST Require Their Own Systems
For a chimney, order a liner system rather than generic exhaust flex. DuraVent directs users to verify appliance venting requirements, liner sizing and code compliance, and to have the chimney cleaned and inspected before relining.
Check liner ID, permitted fuel and vent configuration, clearances, insulation and required system components. See our chimney-liner selection guide for fuel, fit and flexible-versus-rigid considerations.
For building fuel-gas distribution, use the CSST manufacturer’s tubing, fittings, capacity-sizing rules and installation requirements—not a general metal-hose table. Gastite requires trained, qualified installers for FlashShield+. Matching diameter alone is not sufficient approval for a gas connection.
An Industrial Hose Order Must Specify The Complete Assembly
For an industrial metal-hose assembly, give the fabricator the following information:
| Specification | Information To Supply |
|---|---|
| Service | Application, conveyed medium and external exposure |
| Operating conditions | Temperature range, pressure or vacuum, cycles and spikes |
| Flow | Flow rate or velocity |
| Hose dimensions | Manufacturer, series, nominal ID and maximum allowable OD |
| End connections | Type, size and alloy at each end |
| Length | Overall and live length, with measurement endpoints |
| Movement | Direction, travel and frequency |
| Verification | Required testing, documentation and applicable listing |
These details let the fabricator check the complete assembly rather than only its hose body. Source: Hose Master assembly specification guidance.
If a listing gives only “stainless steel flex pipe,” diameter and length, it leaves the construction, rating and installation limits unresolved. Obtain the product series and service-specific specifications before ordering.
